Putting People Before Profits

"They say we are all in the same boat — but those of us at the bottom are drowning."

"It's time to dose the gap"

"Labour, Tory, Lib Dems they are all the same under their suits. They all support privatisations and anti-union laws. The political debate now is all about who is going to cut more from public spending. Brown and Blair just masqueraded as Labour and then put the knife into the unions. That is why I am pleased to be part of TUSC." Bob Crow, RMT General Secretary (PC)

Prior to the recent boundary changes Brightside was one of the poorest constituencies in the country whilst neighbouring Hallam was one of the richest. Incredibly, after 13 years, New Labour has achieved something that not even Thatcher and the Tories were able to do – they've widened the gap between the richest and the poorest people. Add to that the sleaze and corruption of MP's expenses and the massive bail out of the banks with our money (And those same greedy bankers are still paying themselves huge bonuses) then it's no wonder working people are left feeling betrayed, disillusioned and ignored. On the recession we are being told we are all in the same boat and that we'll have to suffer cuts. But we aren't in the same boat. The rich are on a luxury liner whilst the rest of us are clinging onto a leaky lifeboat. Locally we are already seeing cuts. Charges for pest control, cuts in adult learning and parks provision and which ever of the main parties gets elected those cuts are going to become even more severe. Well I'm fed up with being told that we will have to pay for their mess. The rich are still getting richer and the rest of us fight for the scraps at the bottom. We live in the fifth richest country in the world – we have the technology to fly to the moon to go to the bottom of the deepest ocean but yet we can't provide for peoples basic needs. In the general election you are given the image that the choice is between, cuts, cuts and more cuts – but we reject this. We can't afford to pay for the crisis created by the rich – its time to make them pay – its time to close the gap.
