Over the past four years your local Liberal Democrat councillors have worked hard for you to improve our area

Here are just some of the issues we have worked on where you live: • installed flower baskets along Upper Street and at Highbury Corner • secured council funding to improve the forecourt at Highbury & Islington station, move the post office and create a new open space. • supported residents at planning committee to oppose plans for the 85 Canonbury Road site • won council funding for repairs work to the Union Chapel • improved the Town Hall forecourt to make it a more attractive space • lobbied Transport for London to ensure bus drivers don’t disturb residents by leaving their engines running at the bus stand at Highbury Corner. • won the fight to get new street lights in Alwyne Villas, Canonbury Lane, Canonbury Road, Canonbury Square, Compton Avenue and Terrace, Edwards Cottages & Tyndale Terrace

Your Liberal Democrat councillors have also worked with the council to: • pay for a new rapid-response team of eight police officers for the south of the borough and introduced temporary dispersal zones locally to reduce crime • keep your council tax below the London average over the last four years and freeze it this year. Liberal Democrats proposed a freeze last year but instead Labour imposed inner London’s highest rise on residents.

Liberal Democrat councillors have made a real difference to improving our local area.

At the elections on May 6th, as well as choosing your new local MP, you will also be choosing your three local councillors for the next four years. We believe we have a real record of actlon. But we want to carry on our work to make our local area an even better place to live, work and relax.

On the other side of this letter you will see our pledges for the next four years. These are our promises to you. We hope you will give us your support and elect three hard working Liberal Democrat councillors to work with Bridget Fox on 6th May

Our pledges to you

Locally, we will: 1. make major improvements to Highbury Corner, including moving the post office to a permanent building and creating a new open space. 2. Fight for a safer pedestrian and cycle crossing at the Madras Place/Holloway Road junction 3. use every available licensing tool to work with restaurants, off-licences and bars along Upper Street and Essex Road to limit anti-social behaviour caused by their premises. 4. clean up the area around Essex Road station. 5. carry out an audit of potholes in the local area and get them filled 6. open the new extended open space at Arundel Square 7. fight for the best possible deal for residents on the Royal Mail sorting office and Essex Road bingo hall planning applications 8. ensure the most sensitive development possible at the 85 Canonbury Road site

On the council, we will: 1. Cut crime and anti-social behaviour • more visible late-night policing; crack down on badly-managed bars, clubs and off licences; tougher action against irresponsible dog owners 2. Make Islington greener • set up a network of local energy generation schemes across Islington to create jobs, reduce emissions and lower heating bills 3. Give our young people the best start in life • keep improving school exam results; new school buildings; give local young people extra housing points so they can have their own homes; provide more apprenticeships 4. Keep lsIington’s council tax among the lowest in London.
