Opencast Mining - the facts

The County Council has consulted on a request by UK Coal Ltd to designate land near the village of Shuttington for opencast mining. This consultation began in 2007. Local people were not informed and there were no consultation meetings in this area. By chance a villager doing a Google search on the word Shuttington on his computer exposed the consultation. I was informed and immediately posted 8,000 letters warning local people about it and asking them to write a letter of objection. Over 800 people did so. I also spoke at a public protest meeting organised by the Parish Council. The County Council should have announced the outcome of the consultation months ago but have delayed the result until after the election.
