Re-elect Nick Palmer

What I Stand For Securing the Economy I support a gradual return to growth and economic balance, rather than the Conservatives' 'emergency budget' with what Ken Clarke admits would have to be more public service cuts than Mrs Thatcher. We need to make savings in the coming years and I favour rethinking prestige projects like Trident, but not savage cuts driven by an outdated right-wing ideology.

A National Care Service Balancing the NHS, we will develop a new National Care Service, with free care at home for the elderly with the highest needs. I will fight to protect care homes like Bramwell, to help develop a decent service to help with the burden of Alzheimer's and dementia. We've already seen the Conservative approach locally - when they see a good public service like Bramwell, they immediately try to sell it off.

Protecting Your Health The Conservatives would abolish your right to see a cancer specialist within two weeks if your GP suspects it, forcing patients in danger to go private or risk the disease taking hold. I support Labour's new commitment to cancer diagnosis within one week. We need to defend the achievements that have made the NHS a first-class service again.

Is Education Important? Three crucial issues will be decided by this election: * Every secondary school in Broxtowe will benefit from Labour's 'Building Schools for the Future' programme. Schools are not a Conservative priority (unlike slashing taxes for millionaires) and the programme is at risk. * The Tories would abolish the cap on university top-up fees, making universities like Nottingham unaffordable for ordinary families. I will oppose any real increase in the cap. * Not everyone is academic. Apprenticeships have revived under Labour - we need to ensure there is a place for everyone who can benefit. Everyone deserves a chance to benefit from further education - not just those who can afford to pay.
